Crystals

This is such an easy project that has such pretty results. These crystals are so bright and colorful.

They would be great for a sensory table.

We used: Ice cream salt, water color paints, bowl, spatula and cookie sheet.
Pour in the paint and stir.
Spread at on cookie sheet and allow to dry.
It is much prettier than the picture shows.

Activities for "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie"

In my preschool classes, we have been reading the book," If You Give A Mouse A Cookie."

I have been feeling under the weather for the last week or so, that is why there is not step by step instructions. But I think most activities are self explanatory.

First, we made mouse ears to wear.

Then we made mouse puppets with white paper bags.
This is a students mouse, that is why the eye is not in the normal place.

We also painted triangles and decorated the triangles to be mice.
Instead of triangles, you can turn the letter "M" into a mouse.
You could also paint the letter"C" for cookie. Paint the "C" a light brown and add dark brown circles for chocolate chips.

I also made some fake cookies out of construction paper. Hid them around the room and had the kids pretend they were mice trying to find the cookies.
Tomorrow for snack, we are going to decorate sugar cookies.

Coffee Brown Bear

We are continuing to learn about bears in my pre-school class. Today my toddlers worked on these coffee bears.

I have seen this idea in several places, but it worked so well I thought I would share it.


We used: A bear coloring sheet, glue mixed with some water, paint brush, coffee,a small pom-pom, and wiggly eyes.

Paint the coloring sheet with the glue mixture and while still wet, sprinkle on the coffee. Shake off access.
Then glue on eyes and pom-pom for the nose.

This was fun and made the room smell so good.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Polar Bear, Polar Bear

In my 2's class we are talking about bears

We read, "Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear ?" and "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?"

For our polar bear projects we glued cotton balls on to a polar bear coloring sheet.
And did a great project by DLTK, a polar bear made from circles.


For "Brown Bear, Brown Bear," the kids painted the letter "B" and glued on shaped to turn it in to a bear.

Fun with Ice !!!

This is a fun, fun project. I saw something similar on another blog, here at Teaching Two.

I did this at home with my 4 year old and in my 2's class, they both loved it.

We used a Glad container, water and plastic bugs (but any little plastic toys would work).

Placed the water and bugs in the container and froze them.



Remove the ice from the container on to a tray and allow the kids to get the bugs free.

I gave them salt, warm water, spoons, water dropper, forks and hammers.
They had so much fun removing the bugs from the ice.

MLK Day Craft

A teacher at my preschool did this craft today. I thought it was so cute.

It is just 3 different colored hand prints with, "All children can play together." written on it.

So simple, but such a BIG message!!!!

Making Snow !!!

Here is a fun way and easy way to make snow that does not melt. Really !!! When it comes out of the freezer it really feels like snow, when it is not cold it feels like jelly . My kids love it. I am going to add it to my preschool class' sensory table.



There are a couple of ways to get the ingredient necessary to make fake polymer snow. You can purchase the fake snow or you can harvest sodium polyacrylate from common household sources. It is non-toxic but do not let the kids purposely eat it.

You can find sodium polyacrylate inside disposable diapers or as crystals in a garden center, used to help keep soil moist.


All you need to do to make this type of fake snow is add water to the sodium polyacrylate. Add some water, mix the gel. Add more water until you have the desired amount of wetness. The gel will not dissolve. It's just a matter of how 'slushy' you want your snow.


You can put it in the refrigerator or freezer to make it more like snow.



If you want to change it's color just add food coloring.

Make Your Own Snowflakes

We made these cool snowflakes. All 4 of my kids loved this, my kids ages range from 10-4 years of age. This is a great project for all ages.

I was reminded of this project by Adventure of Bear.

We used: Borax (in the laundry section), boiling water, pipe cleaners, wide mouth jars, yarn, butter knife and scissors.
Cut the pipe cleaners and shape like snowflakes. Any shape will turn out cool. No 2 snowflakes are alike. The snowflake needs to be able to fit in the jar.

Tie yarn onto snowflake and rap the other end of the yarn to the butter knife for when you place it in the jar.

Pour 3 Tbsp of Borax per every cup of boiling water in a wide mouth jar.
Stir until Borax is dissolved.

Place the pipe cleaner in the mixture.

Now wait an hour or more for the crystals to grow. The really sparkle in the light.
